They said it couldn't be done.
They were wrong.

"VisionLand will provide a safe, secure experience for families and children. We invite you to come and see Alabama's newest attraction - a place we can be proud of and excited about. It took a lot of cooperation and a lot of hard work, but now the Vision is a reality. It's a place we can all enjoy."

Larry Langford
Mayor of Fairfield
Chairman of the Board, WJAPPA

When Fairfield, Alabama Mayor Larry Langford first proposed the idea of a major theme park for the Birmingham-Jefferson County area, most people dismissed it as an impossible dream.

After all, he wasn't talking about selling the concept to a Six Flags or Disney. He wanted a group of towns and cities around Birmingham, Alabama to band together to provide seed money for the park.

It was an unprecedented vision. And for Mayor Langford it became a crusade. By mid-1995 Langford had financial commitments from eleven city governments, ranging from $1.2 million from the City of Birmingham to $1,770 from the small town of North Johns. It was an amazing show of cooperation, and it was enough to convince the state legislature to give the go-ahead for a $60 million bond offering.

At every step along the way, critics argued that VisionLand couldn't & wouldn't…happen. But today the 70-acre park is a reality.

The park opened May 23,1998.

Now, aren't you glad somebody decided to make VisionLand more than just a vision?
